Mapping My Digital Space
What is a Digital Space?
This week we learned about the concept of digital space and where we fall in the spectrum of visitor vs resident. The term digital space means what we see on a digital device such as laptop, smartphone, or tablet. A digital space is space created on the internet and is a space that people can use or interact with. A digital space can be used as a tool or for a community to interact. Business' use digital space for a wide variety purpose such as ecommerce, data storage, and day to day operations. The education field has been diving much more into digital space and utilizing one to one technology to replace traditional teaching. In education we use digital space for research, collaboration, and even prestation of content. We learned that digital space can be used for personal or professional use or a combination of both. We also learned that there is a spectrum to measure where we fall within the digital space realm. Residents' leave a digital marker and are members of a community. An example of a resident is a person that may use Twitter regularly for professional or personal use. An example of a visitor is a person that may browse Google for information but does not publish work of their own for Google to house.
My Digital Map
Below is my digital map. This assignment was eye opening, I always considered myself novice when it comes to technology and didn't think that I used tech as much as I really do. I use tech for a wide variety of uses in my personal life such as shopping, banking, communication, and keeping up with my daughters school. In my professional life, I've been using technology much more in the past two years than ever. I have the COVID pandemic to thank for that, maybe the only positive out for the whole experience.

How I see my Map in the Future
I only see growth in the future and see a lot more movement towards the resident end of the spectrum of resident vs visitor. I also see myself using more digital space in both personal life and professional life. I would like to go completely paperless for all my financial needs. This will eliminate the hours of shredding financial documents I spend at the end of the year.

Hi Joe!
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting to see everyone's digital maps. I, too would like to go completely paperless for my financial needs. At this point, I think I have opted into digital statements for all of the accounts I can. Some accounts do not provide that as an option for whatever reason. I never thought of the terms "visitor" and "resident" before, but after doing this assignment I've really reflected on the apps I use and why. On my digital map, I've found that most of the apps and programs I use are to manage daily tasks such as paying bills, ordering groceries, or documenting important information. I even stored my COVID-19 vaccination card on the Notes app on my Iphone. After going through all of my apps, I was shocked to see that I can basically manage the main aspects of my daily life through my phone. I also want to become more of a resident on programs and apps. I admit that I do get sucked into some social media and am more of a resident on Instagram and Facebook. I think it might help for me to follow more professional accounts that give me helpful ideas to implement in my professional life.

Hi Kate,
DeleteThank you for the comment! I like your idea of storing your COVID-19 vaccination card in the Notes app on your phone. I've been carrying mine around with me, I'm definitely going to use your idea!
Hi Joe!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your insights on digital mapping and how we use our time on technology. I am sure almost everybody's technology usage increased during the pandemic. I took advantage of my 2.5 month unemployment period during the time my center was closed to delve into skills and activities that I have been wanting to try but never had the time for. I ended up trying out and loving both no-knead bread baking and homemade pasta! How did your time and usage change during the pandemic? I am curious to see what different skills and apps you might have picked up during the lockdown.
Like you, I prefer digital files over hard copies. I shifted toward digital files since most venues accept digital and they are more environmentally friendly. Digital files are also much easier to access when one can just search for them on a device.
I look forward to hearing more about your growth in the future!
Hi Beatrix,
DeleteThank you for the comment! I did notice during the pandemic that my time on the internet and using tech tools increased. I was ordering groceries online at one point. I also found myself utilizing my school's MS TEAMs app as a platform to teach remotely. I used TEAMs before but not at the capacity I did during the pandemic. This school year I continue to use the TEAMs page to post my MLO, agenda, and notes. I'll have to give no-knead bread at shot, I love trying out new recipes. Thanks again for the comment!
Hi Joe,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed looking at your digital map that you created, it was nice to see some of the apps you use professionally as both a visitor and a resident. Currently those are pretty bare bones for me but like you mentioned its all about growth, I to see myself expanding on my resident side as oppose to the personal side. I have to say I am more of a visitor than a resident to most apps but with time I know that will change. I like how you are starting to transition to more digital spaces in both your professional and personal life, I swear by it! I was also going to suggest storing your covid card as a favorites photo in your photo album or in your notes as well, both are super helpful and convenient.
Hi Jillian,
DeleteThank you for the comment! I'm definitely going to store an electronic copy of my vaccine card in my phone. This will make things much easier if I ever need to display it. My school recently asked us to provide proof. Thanks again for the comment!
Hi Joe!
ReplyDeleteI really liked your introduction about what is digital space. While we often think of digital space as the internet and a way to communicate, I liked how you highlighted digital space from the perspective of a business and education. It offered great insight into the many benefits of technology. Additionally, when reflecting on my own digital map, I too was very surprised at the number of apps I use on a daily basis. Technology does offer many advantages to our lives, such as paperless copies of important documents and reminders about important things to do. However, with all these advantages, it is important to remember to find time to disconnect from technology and give our minds and eyes a break. If I learned anything from teaching all remote last year, blue-light glasses are a great investment when spending so much time on a computer, phone or electronic device. Great post, thank you!
I'm with you on the end of year shredding! While I haven't made it quite paperless when it comes to finances this is a great reminder to me that it might be time! Thanks for the introspective look at how you spend your time online.
