9 Trends in EdTech:
Trends in Educational Technology have been making great strides and have evolved at an even faster pace through the COVID 19 pandemic. There are 9 trends in EdTech: Digital Citizenship, Online Learning Design, Equity and Inclusion, Social Emotional Learning & Cultural Competence, Professional Development, Esports, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Project-Based Learning, and Creativity. I chose to cover Online Learning Design. I chose this because how the pandemic really impacted the rate at which EdTech has been implemented and the increased buy in by educators.
Mathia by Carnegie Learning:
I chose to introduce you to MATHia by Carnegie Learning. MATHia is an online learning tool similar to Khan Academy but in my opinion better. Unfortunately the downside of MATHia is that is not free and your school will have to purchase you licenses for your students to use it. MATHia falls under Online Learning Design as it is a way to present and assess math content to students. MATHia instructs by using videos, notes, and guided problems. It uses AI technology to help students practice. As students practice if they are progressing well the program continues to move them on, if the students are struggling the program loops them around for more practice and also provides "Hints" through the hint tool to use as scaffolding if needed. MATHia collects data which teachers can use to gauge student learning. It determines if a student has mastered a skill or if a student may need remediation. Teachers are able to create their own modules based on the online Carnegie textbook. I really like MATHia and try to use it at least once a week. The data collected is very useful especially for students with IEPs. Another downside of MATHia is that is more individual based and there is no built in collaboration with peers. However, I tell my students that may ask their peers for helps. This is my way to build in collaboration and the SEL component of being able to work with others.
Below is my screencast of a brief description of the use of MATHia. I hope you enjoy!
