Assistive Technology

Source: Expert Insights

Assistive Technology:
Assistive Technology is any device, software, or equipment to help people with disabilities to learn, communicate, or function better.  Assistive technology doesn't just need to be an electronic type of device.  It can also consist of magnifying glasses or even a device that allows a person with mobility issues to put on a sock.

My Strength:
I'm pretty familiar with assistive technology.  I'm a Special Education teacher of 16 years and have used a wide variety of assistive technology in my classroom.  I've used magnifying glasses, large print handouts, audio books, and MP3 audio options in software utilized in the classroom.  I also administer the MP3 Audio version of the PSAT and SAT every year at my school.

My Weakness:
I would say my weakness lies with all the "new" technology out there for students to use.  I still need to learn more about what assistive technology my students can access in their one-on-one technology.  I'm very happy this module had us investigate what's available in our students laptops.  I do feel I need some PD on how to better utilize and access that technology.

Screencast:
Below is my screencast demonstrating how to use Formative.  Formative is an educational technology tool that allows its users to digitize print worksheets, quizzes, and tests. Formative allows teachers to give students real-time feedback while they work.  Teachers are able to see a students work in progress.  The grading feature of the tool is great and easy to use.  Formative also allows a teacher to add audio to a reading passage.  A teacher can record themselves reading the passage, the student will have control of that recorded audio to play and pause.  This assistive technology tool is great for students with reading deficits.  Also, having audio allows for auditory learners to be more successful.  Thank you, I hope you enjoy the screencast.

  1. Thanks for a peek into a tool that can help those that struggle with reading. There are so many barriers for students that we might not consciously think about unless we can 'see' them so this is a great reminder that we need to stay up to date on tools and features that can help us reach all learners.
